In 2002, in his last semester at UCLA, Tom meets and falls in love with Natasha. Not so quick to resist his advances, she precipitates an obsession that will spiral out of control. An Excess of Fumbling is about youth and memory, and the desperation with which we try to create moments when we fear the conditions for their enjoyment will soon be lost. The second novella of the collection follows another young man in his early twenties. Telemahos retells the first books of the Odyssey from the perspective of Odysseus son. As he flees danger at home and makes his way to the court of Sparta, Homers most modern character comes to understand that past failures are no match for the promise one can never live up to.
